Walk Year is a free walking challenge run by Rob ("we," "us"). This page explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. We wrote it in plain language. If anything is unclear, email rob@walkyear.com and you'll hear back from me directly.
The short version
- We collect as little as we can: your first name, your email, and the walking progress you choose to track.
- If you sign in, your goals and check-ins are saved to your account so they follow you to any device. Strava walks never are.
- We never sell your information, and we don't run ads.
- If you connect Strava, your Strava data is shown only to you.
- We don't store your walking routes, maps, or where your walks start and end.
- You can unsubscribe, disconnect, or ask us to delete everything at any time.
What we collect
When you join on walkyear.com. Your first name and email address, so we can send you the Walk Year newsletter and challenge emails.
When you use the Walk Year app. Your start date, the goals you set, your check-ins (date, distance or minutes, and an optional note), and the stickers you earn. This is saved on your own phone or computer, in your browser. If you don't sign in, we can't see it, and if you clear your browser data or uninstall the app, it's gone.
If you sign in. We save your email address and a copy of your Walk Year progress (start date, goals, hand-logged check-ins and stickers) on our servers, so it can follow you to a new phone or computer. We sign you in with a one-time code sent to your email; there are no passwords. Walks that come from Strava are never saved on our servers.
If you use Friends. Your friends see the name you choose, your Walk Year start date, the moments you share and the cheers you give. If you choose, they also see your goal titles, and, if you log walks by hand, how many days you've walked. You decide who your friends are, and you can remove a friend or delete a moment anytime.
If you connect Strava. With your permission, we read your activities from Strava, such as the date, type, distance, and moving time of each walk, run, or hike. We use them only to count your walks toward your Walk Year goals. Your activities go straight to your own phone and aren't stored on our servers. To keep you connected, we store only your Strava account number, your first name, and the access key Strava gives us. We don't keep maps, routes, or start and end locations.
When you email us. Whatever you choose to send, so we can reply.
How we use it
- To run your Walk Year: track your goals, show your progress, and award stickers.
- To send the emails you signed up for, such as weekly nudges and monthly challenges. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
- To answer your questions and keep Walk Year working and secure.
We don't sell or rent your information, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't use your Strava data to train or feed artificial intelligence tools.
Your Strava data
- Your Strava data is shown only to you, inside your own Walk Year. We don't show it to friends, walk partners, or anyone else, including the miles and days that come from it.
- We ask Strava only for the access Walk Year needs to read your activities. We can't post to Strava or change anything there.
- You can disconnect at any time, in Walk Year or in your Strava settings under My Apps. When you disconnect, we stop reading your activities, delete your Strava access key and account details right away, and remove your Strava walks from the app on that phone.
- Walk Year is not made by Strava and is not endorsed by Strava. Strava's own use of your information is covered by Strava's privacy policy.
Who helps us run Walk Year
A few trusted services handle information for us, only to provide Walk Year:
- Cloudflare hosts walkyear.com and the app, stores account data, and protects them from abuse.
- Kit stores your name and email and sends our newsletter.
- Resend delivers the one-time sign-in codes for the app.
- Google Fonts supplies the fonts on our pages. Like any website, it receives your device's IP address when it loads them.
- Strava, only if you choose to connect it.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.
Cookies and tracking
We don't use advertising cookies or cross-site trackers. The app saves your progress in your browser's storage so it works offline. Cloudflare may set a small security cookie to keep out bots. Kit may track whether our emails are opened, which helps us know they're getting through.
How long we keep it
We keep your name and email while you're subscribed, and your account until you delete it. If you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you, and you can ask us to delete your details completely. Your Strava connection details are deleted as soon as you disconnect. Progress saved on your device stays there until you delete it.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of any email.
- Delete your account anytime in the app under Settings. Your account, saved progress and Strava connection are deleted right away.
- See, correct, or delete your information by emailing rob@walkyear.com. We'll take care of it within 30 days, usually much sooner.
- Disconnect Strava at any time, as described above.
Keeping it safe
We use secure connections (HTTPS) everywhere and limit who can access your information. No system is perfect, so if something ever goes wrong, we'll tell you promptly.
Kids
Walk Year isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has signed up, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change how we handle your information, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If the change is significant, we'll also email subscribers before it takes effect.
